The name Halloween derives from the term All Hallows’ Eve (meaning the evening before the Christian All Hallows’ Day). Falling on the 31st of October each year, Halloween is a recognised date in most calendars and is thought to have originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain. The Celts, who lived 2,000 years ago believed that the dead returned to earth on Samhain so would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off roaming ghosts.

Halloween signifies the end of Autumn and beginning of winter, and has long since lost its religious connotations for most. In modern times Halloween is considered a bit of fun and an excuse to dress up, carve a pumpkin, go trick or treating, play spooky games or have a ghostly tea!
